Press Release: October 22, 2026 Ellijay, Ga
The Gilmer County Board of Education announced Mr. Paul Nelson as the sole finalist for the position of Superintendent of Gilmer County Schools. After an extensive process, the Board identified Mr. Nelson as the candidate to lead the district.
The naming of the finalist culminates over two months of search activity by the Gilmer County Board of Education. In August, the Board selected Georgia Leadership Associates to assist them with the search. With the help of the search firm, the position was advertised, and applications were reviewed. The candidates were screened and vetted. Multiple lengthy interviews were conducted for a select group of applicants. With the announcement of the finalist, the Board must now wait at least fourteen days before taking an official vote to employ Mr. Nelson as the next Superintendent of the Gilmer County System. In conjunction with announcing Mr. Nelson as the sole finalist, the Gilmer County Board of Education is officially releasing his biographical information.
“I am honored to have the opportunity to serve as the next Superintendent of Gilmer County Schools. I appreciate the Board’s confidence in me, and am committed to working with Gilmer County Schools Staff to continue the success they have become accustomed to. My family and I look forward to joining the community and making Gilmer County our home.” said Mr. Nelson.
Nelson brings more than two decades of experience in public education, having served as a teacher, coach, assistant principal, principal, and district leader. His experience spans preschool intervention through twelfth grade and includes service in both urban and rural school districts.

In this role, he supports and supervises school leaders, coordinates district professional development, and helps strengthen leadership practices that support school improvement and student achievement. His work includes developing comprehensive professional learning plans, coaching new and experienced leaders, and cultivating future leadership candidates.
Nelson holds an Education Specialist degree in Leadership from Albany State University, a Master of Education from Walden University, and a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Auburn University. His professional preparation also includes superintendent development and school finance training through the Georgia School Superintendents Association, along with additional training in leadership coaching.
